We rated Newcastle takeaways to see which is best

If you can’t spend your money on trebs, you may as well spend it on takeaways

With lockdown continuing to at least March and no chance of visiting your favourite Newcastle restaurants, there is absolutely no sign of our half pizza half pasta Francesca’s craving going away. However, we have collected eight of the best and lesser-known takeaways in Newcastle to satisfy your lockdown cravings or as a post-exam treat.

The Tanners Arms

With a well-deserved 4.7 stars on Deliveroo, this unbelievable yet not very well-known pub in Ouseburn offers the tastiest options for loaded fries, burgers and hot dogs in Newcastle. Toppings range from Berlin Techno-inspired Krakauer sausage with Sauerkraut and currywurst sauce, to Chinese-inspired chip shop curry or katsu sauce with salt and pepper chicken, or spicy Mexican chipotle sauce. Vegetarians can enjoy halloumi burgers and fries, and they don’t hold back on the portion sizes. The possibilities are endless with this one. And did we mention they do vegan seitan alternatives for hot dogs, too?

Cost: Burgers and hot dogs tend to be around £9 each, and loaded fries around £7.50.

Lev’s

Lev’s offers authentic and super delicious Caribbean cooking at fantastically affordable prices in Heaton. Enjoy Jamaican curries with mutton, chicken or oxtail, or classic jerk chicken with sides like rice and peas, dumplings, plantain and mac and cheese. Vegetarian options include jerk jackfruit, chickpea and coconut curry and jerk halloumi. Although this one isn’t available on Deliveroo or Uber Eats, delivery is available for £2-3. If you are able to collect your order, you could enjoy their special combo boxes ranging between £6-9.95 including any main, any side and a choice of steamed veg or slaw.

Cost: Mains range from £3-12, sides range from £1-4.50.

My Delhi

We couldn’t not include this Indian street food classic – My Delhi also deservingly scores high on Deliveroo for its range of classic Indian small plates like onion bhajis, samosas and spicy meat dishes. There’s also a wide range of meat, vegetarian and vegan curries to choose from, and they even offer a Street Bowl option which combines your curry of choice with rice – perfect for people ordering alone who don’t want to pay extra for a full portion of rice.

Cost: Small plates and sides range from £2 to £8, and mains range from £8 to £12.

Rating: 7/10

The Bake One

This Middle Eastern classic provides the goods with various small dishes and mains, as well as hot and cold mezze dishes. Vegetarians can enjoy a range of traditional hummus, falafel, halloumi or aubergine courses. Meat eaters can feast on shawarma chicken or lamb – or both! The Bake One offers Middle Eastern alternatives to the classic Chinese Munch Box, which include a mix of marinated lamb and chicken, served with chips, rice, flatbread and garlic and chilli sauces.

Cost: small plates are around £3-7, mains are between £12-15, and the classic combo box is £17.

Rating: 7/10

Kimchi Planet

Kimchi Planet is the only place in Newcastle that does Korean street food and even offers vegan beef, which tastes absolutely incredible. Although they only have a small menu which includes noodles, rice bowls and kimbap with a few sides, the food tastes amazing, featuring lots of different flavours for a very affordable price. Each section of the menu gives you a veggie option, and the staff are really friendly, so it is definitely worthwhile to support this independent business. They are open for takeaway, to pick up, or on Deliveroo.

Cost: Between £3-4.50 for sides and £7-8.50 for mains.

Rating: 8/10

Pablo Eggsgabao

Starting on Chillingham Road with a popup in Bao Bar, Pablo Eggsgobao have now moved to Whitley Bay, so you can take a wander on the beach with a breakfast bao. The bao’s are served through a hatch for pickup from 7am-2pm. Choose from either a veggie or meat bun, which includes a hash brown, egg, cheese and some chilli sauce (with a sausage patty for the meat bao). Up your breakfast game this winter with this truly delicious filled bao, which is so filling and rivals a McMuffin any day.

Cost: £4 for the veggie and £5 for the meat bao bun

Rating: 7/10

Proven Goods

A bit further to venture from Jesmond or the city centre into Byker, but it is well worth the trip. With the most drool-worthy doughnuts filled with lots of different flavours, which change every month. This month’s specials include clementine and ginger jam, mince pie brandy cream and shortbread, classic vanilla custard doughnuts and many more. Not only are they very Instagrammable, but they taste amazing too. They’re open for takeaways Fridays-Sundays, and paired with a white hot chocolate this is the perfect winter treat.

Cost: Between £2.20-£3 for a doughnut, cookie or brownie and £2.20-£3.80 for a drink

Rating: 10/10

Batch Bakery

Via @batchbakerycafe on Instagram

Located at the bottom of Jesmond near Exhibition Park, Batch Bakery is arguably one of the best bakeries and hidden gems in Newcastle. Before lockdown, they served breakfasts and lunch inside, and now you can still benefit from a huge menu of toasties, pizzas, pastries and sweet treats to take away. This is definitely worth a walk to grab a hot drink or some food before a lockdown walk.

Cost: Between £2.50 and up to £30 for their graze boxes

Rating: 9/10
