Oxford apologises to ‘wealth test’ applicant

Admissions chief admits other unis do not use ‘wealth test’

The university has apologised to a St Hugh’s applicant who is suing for “discrimination against the poor”.

Damian Shannon took the college to court last month after failing a “wealth test” to prove he could afford the £21,000 living costs needed to study at Oxford.

Now Graduate Admissions chief Jane Elizabeth Sherwood has admitted to the court she was wrong to claim that other universities had the same admission practices.

In a written submission, she apologised to Shannon, who did not take up an offer to study an MSc in Economic and Social History.
