This is how your favourite House of the Dragon characters would vote in the General Election

Rhaenyra just screams Labour

One of the biggest events of the year is finally upon us. A bloody battle between two houses campaigning to rule over the kingdom, littered with moral misdeeds, dodgy dealings, and secret alliances formed in the shadows – not to mention more than a few old dragons. No, I’m not talking about the General Election coverage – House of the Dragon is officially back on our screens.

Nothing compares to the political intrigue and escapism of the Seven Kingdoms, rooting for Team Black or Green; unless you’ve turned on the news at any point in the last three months, and had the realisation that Westeros isn’t all that different from Westminster. With the House of the Dragon and the Houses of Parliament causing chaos in equal measure, it’s hard to ignore the parallels between the extended Targaryen clan and British politicians.

With that in mind, this is how each House of the Dragon character would vote in the upcoming General Election.

Rhaenyra – Labour

via HBO

She’s not exactly had an easy time of it: Faking her gay husband’s death just to marry her sociopath uncle all the while still reeling from her teenage situationship with Alicent Hightower. Maybe she’s made some misguided decisions, but her desire to avoid war certainly works in favour of the many, not the few.

Besides, I think she’d be sympathetic to Diane Abbott’s desire to drink tins of M&S slimline gin and tonic on public transport. Make that a negroni (sbagliato, with prosecco in it) and she’d be a surefire Labour supporter.

Alicent – Wouldn’t vote

via HBO

When one interviewer asked Olivia Cooke what Alicent would be doing in modern times, she answered that she would be a trad-wife – and she’s so right. With all that slightly creepy boy-mum energy and years of trauma courtesy of the grimy infection-ridden Viserys, it’s hard to picture Alicent at the polling station. On election day, she’s more likely to be found hand-making toothpaste from a Nara Smith TikTok recipe or buying leads for her children.

Aegon – Tory

via HBO

Aegon III, the usurper king who gained his position through deceit, has a lot in common with the Tory party. He’s got the same energy as a certain blonde Tory oaf – remember that tale about him burning a £50 note in front of a homeless man which Boris strongly denies? Very Aegon III coded.

And those private school gap-year courtiers he hangs around? They resemble that one group of boys you see in the club and immediately cover the top of your drink. Ew.

Daemon – Reform UK

via HBO

Usually found either stumbling around the Red Keep moaning about his wife or scrapping with the smallfolk, Daemon Targaryen could seriously use a milkshake to the face. An avid reposter of vaccine conspiracies, contemporary Daemon would be at the polling station bright and early to shout at Labour supporters and make sure everyone knows he’s NOT problematic, he just really cares about border control – despite having a literal dragon to cross said borders.

Criston Cole – Tory

He had potential; from lowly beginnings to Commander of the City Watch, and now newly instated Hand of the King. Unfortunately, in Criston Cole’s case, with great power comes the certainty of becoming an utter knob. I mean, he’s still acting up from Rhaenyra’s gentle rejection a full decade ago. I would say he cries himself to sleep every night, but it’s more likely that he combs through incel subreddits – once he’s left Alicent’s quarters, of course.

Aemond – Lib Dem

Aemond can really sympathise with the Lib Dems. A classic case of second son syndrome, he generally has the right idea – not that it makes any difference, when his brother and half-sister have presented themselves as the only viable options. Whilst some may have him pinned as a Tory, I think his history of being taunted with pigs might get in the way of that.

Helaena – Green

Helaena is perhaps the most underrated member of the Targaryen clan; not only the Queen consort of Westeros, but also a gifted dreamer who can predict the future. She’s never cared about politics, so whilst her siblings battled for control of the Seven Kingdoms, she would likely vote her a party who vowed to protect the beings she cares about most. No, not her family – her insect friends.
