We caught up with Dog and Scone to see how the dog cafe is getting on

They’ve got a new puppy

Newcastle is lucky enough to have a cafe where you can cuddle a canine: Dog and Scone. We've headed back down, six months after our first trip, to see how the cafe is getting on and do an interview with owner Sean Shi. The six dogs currently at the cafe are all owned by Sean and his wife, and the new bundle of joy is Teacup Pomeranian Sugar.

As we arrive we are welcomed in, asked to apply hand sanitiser to avoid making the dogs ill, and sit down to order our drink – which is included in the price of entry (£5). Sean comes from the back, introduces himself and sits down with another member of staff.

We come here too often

How has it been since opening?

"It has been really good, people have very much seemed to like the cafe. Customer satisfaction has been high, and everyone leaves the cafe with a smile on their face. It has been an interesting learning curve for staff, particularly as the personalities of the dogs have changed as they've grown older.

The dogs really like to see people and even get excited to come back into the café in the mornings, they find home boring now."

Do you have any plans for Christmas?

"It’s pretty early to think about Christmas but so far the only plans we have are to decorate the cafe and to bring out a custom blanket like we did for Halloween. Keep checking the Instagram account though!"

Now what you all want to hear about: The new puppy…

She's so little

What’s her name? Sugar

How old is the she? 4 months

What breed is she? Teacup Pomeranian

Where is she from?

"We first decided on the breed of the dog, then searched for breeders online. Sugar was got from just outside of Manchester, I think."

So are you expecting any more dogs?
"Not yet, but maybe in the future. Currently we've got seven dogs, six dogs in the café, and Morning resting up at home because she was ill and is still feeling very timid. Seven dogs are enough to be getting on with!"

Coffee and Lucky taking a chill moment

So, what are the personalities of the dogs?

Momo, Toy Poodle: "Momo is very entitled and considers herself the best, however she loves people."

Coffee, Corgi: "He is the only boy and the most playful of the group, he likes to think of himself as in charge."

Lucky, Bichon Friese: "She is the guard dog, and will bark at people outside, but when you come inside she immediately wants to be fussed and make friends."

Laughing, Pug: "She is the trouble maker, still a puppy and is particularly naughty, she chews things and likes to wind up the other dogs."

Yuki, Toy Yorkshire Terrier: "She is shy, probably because she is so very tiny but she is getting better and particularly likes sitting on peoples laps now."

Sugar, Teacup Pomeranian: "She's the baby of the group and still getting used to the café; but she seems to be taking to it well and she is showing that she may be quite clever."

Any funny stories?

"Lucky will stick her head in any bag, and likes to steal personal items, she has done it several times to customers."

"When Sugar first arrived Coffee, despite being several times her size, was really scared of her and used to run away."

He's not scared of her anymore

"Sugar was originally called Angel, however she was really ill we took her to the vet but was worried that she wasn't going to make it, but she did and the Vet told us it was due to low glucose levels. So we thought, we have to rename her Sugar, and it stuck." – We think this suits her perfectly as she looks like a tiny ball of candyfloss.

What do you train the dogs to do?

"Each dog can sit on command and are toilet trained, a part from Sugar yet, however all the commands are very much treat dependent."

Do you encourage people to start their own dog cafes?

"We have been sent lots of emails from people all over the UK contacting us about starting their own cafes; asking for advice and opinions. I am very much for it and we have already met with the owners of the Edinburgh Chihuahua cafe who came to visit and brought their dogs with them too" – however Dog and Scone do not encourage people to bring their own dogs to the cafe.

So if you don't think you're degree is particularly employable why not start your own dog cafe? We're tempted.

If you're missing your dogs at home or just want a bit of TLC, Dog and Scone is deffo the place for you and after sixth months of success we're happy it looks like it's here to stay.
