CCTV misogynistic? I must be missing something

FemSoc misinterpret fun for misogynistic behaviour. Here is why I think they are wrong, says James Dickman.

In such an open environment of a university, why has the feminist society’s most notable contribution been to peddle forth the petty condemnation of promotional videos?

After un-blurring the lines, it seems that their objective is not to prohibit girls from acting at their own liberty, or even to ban CCTV. It is to regulate the videos to better align their content with the university’s principles. So according to them, the videos showing girls in a ‘provocative and misogyinstic’ manner are a marketing ploy for the the club.

Having watched the videos, with an eye on this supposed sexual perversion, the most sexualised image I could find was a moment when Friar Tuck entered, then proceeded to unbutton his shirt, whilst his merry men caressed his layers from behind. What CCTV was trying to ‘market’ here I’m not sure.

Ironically, there are far more naked male upper bodies on show than there are female ones. How sexist. All the while Dave is walking like an Egyptian to Ne-Yo whilst his mate is squawking without diction, with enough jaeger spilt down their fronts to intoxicate a washing machine. The majority of drunken lark merely exists as a gimmick to entice people to get jolly and head out.

Any evidence presenting misogynistic behaviour is at the very most slim. And when the focus is on girls, it’s pretty much just them bopping around not doing a great deal. I’ve been more offended by rice. Compared to some non NSU affiliated clubs, CCTV is angelic. Promotional videos such as ‘Hanzo…Haven’t you heard’ at Perdu could be picked up as an Al Qaeda anti west recruitment video, conveying such an epic display of douchery that I had to just make up a word. However the lead role in his performance as a shaven monkey kicked through Jack Wills is worthy of an Oscar, or at the very least a biscuit.

The criticism the from the feminist society here is too black and white. Viewing it from a stereotyped male perspective suggesting that by ogling at gaggles of girls in the booth incentivises people to go there. It doesn’t.

There are a multitude of more important issues on campus that feminists should create a discourse with instead. But struggling like a wet squid trying to undo a bra, they’re clutching at straws by perusing this subject and its undermining their cause, just like that last metaphor did this article.
