The First Annual NU Lion’s Den

Budding entrepreneurs competed for prize money of £5000 to aid them in their business.

The first ever NU Lion’s Den event was held on Wednesday in the Student Union and was considered a massive success by all who entered and participated. 33 companies entered the competition to win a slice of the £5000 prize money.

The entries ranged from clothing companies to tech companies to animal handlers (yes they had a snake at the event!).

Viewers were provided with fake investment money on arrival and were then told to choose their favourite company to invest in.

The Lions (5 successful business people) then went round and heard a 1 minute pitch from each of the 33 participants.

From that the Lions shortlisted 10 to pitch on stage to the whole audience. 5 companies were then awarded £1000 for their efforts and provided with mentoring advice from the Lions themselves.

The joint winners were:

Escalate: https://www.facebook.com/#!/EscalateNCL
PetChip: http://www.petchip.org.uk/
UniWikis
Laugh Louder: www.laughlouder.co.uk

These are some fantastic ideas and we wish them all the best, especially with this help from the Lions.

James Pringle, Founder and Managing Director of Laugh Louder Ltd. and joint-winner said: ‘I am delighted to be a winner of the first ever NU Lion’s Den event. It was a fantastic event that all the participating companies would have benefited from entering. I would definitely recommend entering next year to anyone that has a business or even just an idea.’
