Confirmed: Changes to Leicester’s degree system
The uni’s academic layout will be freshened up with a snazzy new American style programme
Leicesters vice-chancellor, Professor Paul Boyle has confirmed that future students will have the option to take on a degree involving a major and a minor subject.
This opportunity will give prospective students the chance to study a particular aspect of their subject in far more depth coupled with a minor that will make for a degree with more breadth as well.
Students will be able to choose their own subject combinations and have more say and responsibility for the layout and content of their course.
VC Paul Boyle explained: “Some may want to come and sit a pure degree and concentrate on one subject, but there are others who may wish to take physics for instance and include some philosophy.”
He boasts: “It’s exactly the sort of flexibility students are looking for.”
He has also explained that these changes will be implemented to appeal to international students in particular.
By taking a leaf out of the book from our friends across the pond, the degree programme offers an idea of Leicester’s international outlook.
Third year English student Jennifer Horsfall says: I think it could have its benefits so long as the pairings of majors and minors are somewhat linked. I’d have probably considered a minor in another topic given the chance, though I don’t know how employers will receive the degrees, they could find it bizarre.”
