Explosion and demolition of Leicester eyesore

It went boom

A controlled demolition of the former Leicester council headquarters, New Walk Centre, took place yesterday.

The eyesore had been part of Leicester’s skyline for over 40 years and was situated between Welford Road and the end of New Walk.

Demolition cost £3.5 million and took months of planning due to the location of the towers and their close proximity to other buildings.

Leicester residents and students watched the demolition and shared photos and videos of the only exciting part about the building – the bit where it got blown up.

Streets surrounding the site resembled a creepy scene from Silent Hill as dust from the demolition spread through the area.

Footage and photos from various vantage points in the city were shared throughout the day with vidoes of the explosion generating hundreds of thousands of views in just a few hours.
