Sussex student cause of death confirmed as cardiac arrest

The Mechanical Engineering student was pronounced dead at the scene

This February, Victor Dawodu was found lying unconscious in his room at the University of Sussex.

Security guard Richard Walker entered the student's East Slope accommodation after concerns that he had not been in contact with his family for two days.

Victor's parents last heard from him before he went to bed on Thursday February 8th, which they stated was extremely out of character. The security guard performed CPR on the 20-year-old, however the paramedics pronounced him dead when they reached the scene.

According to his father, no other members of the family have suffered cardiac arrest, as he told the court. Therefore, Victor's case was unusual as he was not known to suffer any serious medical issues.

According to the post-mortem examination after his death, a small amount of cannabis was found within his body. Despite this, coroner Gilva Tisshaw concluded this played no role in his death and that he died of natural causes.

Although the reasons behind this are unknown, it is likely that Victor had an underlying condition that caused his cardiac arrest.
