Holocaust Awareness Week

We pop along to hear about the experiences of a holocaust survivor.

In memory of the Holocaust, the History Society, with the Stanley Burton Centre, arranged for two Holocaust survivors to give a talk to students about their experiences.

Monday’s talk featured John Dobai, born in 1934 in Budapest, Hungary. During the occupation by the Germans, his father was able to obtain three visas which allowed his family to escape to Sweden. In 1948 they finally settled in England.

John has been giving his impressive talks for eight years. He does so because he wants the memory of the Holocaust to live on. He said: “I do this because my cousin and I promised each other we would as long as we live.”

John said there is still a danger of anti-Semitism, but agreed that Germany does very well in educating pupils about the Holocaust.

This speech was a rare opportunity to meet a survivor and was useful in understanding the Holocaust and its horrors.

If you missed this talk, don’t worry. Another is planned this week. On Wednesday, George Pogany, a Hungarian survivor will give a talk. A talk will also been given on Dark Tourism which will focus on concentration camps.
