How to throw the perfect Brookes house party

According to some Oxford house party legends

Everyone loves a house party. It’s the perfect opportunity to get drunk without blowing your student loan or being victimised by a bouncer.

A couple of weeks ago, four Brookes students’ legendary house party on Div Road was quickly shut down by the police, so we asked them for their top tips about how to throw the perfect house party.

The Guest List

Create that obligatory private Facebook event and determine a guest list to supply the friend on the door. Hopefully this will keep things under control and deter those inevitable gate crashers who could not only trash your house, but also shut down the party.

Preparation

Organisation is key. Move all furniture aside to to make room for that much needed dance space. Plastic sheeting is also great for keeping the floor clean in the aftermath, especially if you have carpets. If you’re student loan allows, consider hiring a cleaner the day after.

Soundproof the windows and doors using cardboard and mattresses to reduce the noise impact on your neighbours. We also sealed the doors with gaffa to prevent the smoke from the smoke machine setting of fire alarms in neighbouring rooms

Make sure you plan for all weather, so providing a gazebo outside enlarges capacity and creates the ideal make shift smoking area whilst also sheltering you from the forces of Mother Nature.

Mood lighting and chilled seating area

Appropriate lighting achieves the best vibe for both the inside and outside set up, so stock up on those fairly lights to set the tone. A beer pong table is always appreciated. Fancy dress code? A little décor also helps achieve the theme.

Who doesn’t like some cross flat bonding?

The DJ and sound/lighting equipment

Of course no house party would be complete without the perfect DJ equipment and large dance space. As I’m sure many would agree, audio speakers, strobe lights, lasers, and smoke machine always guarantee a successful house party.

Last but not least, most importantly remember to stock up on plenty of alcohol, beverages etc, including some wine to keep the peace with your neighbours.

Oh, and make sure it doesn’t get shut down by the police.
