Another Labour win for Oxford East

Small victories eh

Labour candidate, Andrew Smith has secured another win for the Oxford East constituency.

The anticipation of the results wasn’t exactly nail-biting – Oxford East is a safe seat for Labour with a huge majority of 25,356 votes awarded to Andrew Smith – that’s 50 per cent of the overall votes.

Conservative candidate, Melaine Magnee claimed a dismal 20 per cent of the votes for Oxford East.

But a surprising result for Ann Duncan and the Greens as they went from a discouraging 2.4 per cent in 2010 to a whopping 11.6 per cent of the votes.

This result could be predominantly down to the large student population in the Oxford East area, with the Greens campaign particularly centred around the student area of Cowley.

Celebrating green party supporters

Paige Clarkson, a fresher at Oxford Brookes and Green party supporter told us: “I’m really happy with the result – it’s a small step into a new generation of politics.”

She happily agreed that the Labour win was a give-in, but added at least the Tory’s didn’t get in.
