Freshers, The Manchester Tab wants YOU to join the team

New academic year, new you, and what better way to start than by joining the best (and most fun) student newspaper in Manchester. 

We’re on the lookout for new writers, content creators and budding journalists to join our ranks: And we want you. 

If you’re a student in Manchester with an ear for gossip and an eye for trends, there’s no other place to be. We’ve been keeping students up to date with the juiciest campus stories and news for years, which is why we’re the biggest name in student journalism.  

Whether you’re a fresher, dreading your dissertation or deep in a masters degree, you’re welcome here. We want news to represent all of Manchester, so our writers span across Manchester Metropolitan Uni, Uni of Salford, Uni of Manchester and more. 

Our first open meeting is taking place on Wednesday 23rd September at 6pm, at The Britons Protection, Manchester. We can’t wait to get you on board!

Wait- What is The Manchester Tab? 

The Manchester Tab is part of the largest network of student news publications, The Tab. Writers and social media creators will have the opportunity to cover breaking news, campus gossip, silly features and absolutely everything about Manchester student life. 

Here’s a few stories you could be working on:

We cover anything and everything Manchester, you could be investigating the closure of a university building, or deciding what packet of crisps your uni societies are. If it’s something students want to read or watch, it has a place here. 

We have over 13k followers on Instagram, and over 5k on TikTok. Our articles and socials content can get thousands of views, so writing and producing videos for us is a great way to get your content seen.

Writing for The Manchester Tab is a great chance to build your portfolio, meet some lovely future journalists and get on-the-job training to add to your CV. Past writers have gone on to work for the BBC, Vogue, and other major culture organisations.

If journalism isn’t for you, the skills you learn here can be transferred to any future experience- even if it’s just trying to make your mates laugh in the pub.

You absolutely don’t need any experience to join! Our editors love helping new writers learn the ropes, and you’ll quickly become one of the best student journalists in Manchester, with top skills in video editing, crafting engaging stories and navigating WordPress.

You can produce as much, or as little, as you like! Some of our writers have weekly articles on the site, while others choose to write once per term instead. You can either pitch your own ideas to our editors or access our pitch lists filled with great suggestions to get you started. If TikToks’ are more your thing, you can send us one, or one hundred. 

I’m in, how do I join?

Come along to our first meeting of the year at The Britons Protection on Wednesday 23rd September. No need to fill anything in, or send us a CV, just bring yourself! Our meetings happen weekly from late September, so if you can’t make it, don’t stress.
