University of Manchester relaunches free bus service

The service will run from Manchester Victoria to the campus

The University of Manchester have relaunched a free bus service for students and staff, in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester.

Services will run from Manchester Victoria Station to campus, between Corporation Street and outside the Students Union building.

After the 2025 trial was dubbed a success by staff and students, the 41 service has been funded for a further one-year trial, beginning Monday 3rd August.

University students, colleagues and Students’ Union colleagues can all use the free service by showing drivers their ID when boarding.

In a release published to StaffNet, the university explained the service forms part of their sustainable travel plan, encouraging staff and students to move away from car commutes.

The university hopes this will help “reduce our carbon emissions, improve the local air quality, and support our sustainability commitments.”

Alongside the existing services to Piccadilly, the schemes aim to ease the cost of living on students and staff.

The University of Salford offers a similar service with the 50 bus, free for students traveling between Peel Park or Frederick Road campuses and MediaCity.

Manchester Metropolitan does not offer free bus or tram links for students.
