The live-action Tangled isn’t even out yet, but people are already dragging the sneak peeks
Did they really need to give Flynn Rider a moustache?
The Disney D23 showcase took place over the weekend, revealing exclusive footage, casting updates, and sneak peeks for upcoming films, including the live-action remake of Tangled.
At the event, the audience were given a first look into the film. In the first clip, the camera traces Rapunzel’s hair up a staircase. The crowd begins to applaud as Teagan Croft, starring as Rapunzel, is seen on screen.
In the second clip, a door is seen slowly opening, with a hand slowly reaching to open it. The crowd erupts in cheers when they realise it is Mother Gothel, and even more so when Kathryn Hahn emerges from behind the door.
Since the phrase “live-action Tangled” began to surface, there has been much speculation about casting and pretty much everything surrounding the film.
Of course, some viewers already love the new Tangled, with many admiring the casting, describing Teagan as the “perfect Rapunzel” and referring to Kathryn as “mother Hahn.”
However, others haven’t been as gushing, so here’s a round-up of all the different criticisms viewers have had after watching the Tangled live-action sneak peeks.
The quality of Teagan Croft’s wig while playing Rapunzel

Probably the most widespread criticism viewers have had relates to the look of Rapunzel’s hair. It’s unsurprising that her hair is at the forefront of so many conversations, given that the movie centres around Rapunzel’s golden, magical locks.
One user on X expressed her frustration: “Disney is putting cheap wigs where the hair IS part of the storyline.”
More viewers continued to describe the wig as “flat boring hair for a Disney princess,” with some even comparing her look to Regina George. Another user said: “The wig is bothering me Disney should have put more effort in to it considering it is a movie about magical hair.”
The use (or lack) of colour in the Tangled live-action remake
I remember when Wicked was first released and there were complaints about the bleak and washed out use of colour. Many of these conversations have pointed towards “the downfall of colour in film.”
It seems this pattern has continued with the live-action Tangled, with person exclaiming: “The tangled live action better have more vibrant colouring than that.”
Not only has the colouring of the film been described as “lifeless and bland,” but so has Rapunzel’s dress. One X user complained “they took away the purple” from her iconic look.
Flynn Rider has been given a moustache in the new Tangled
After the initial sneak peeks into Rapunzel and Mother Gothel’s characters, Milo Manheim, playing Flynn Rider, shows up on screen with Teagan Croft. The stars are seen in their characters’ costumes, sparking confusion among the audience, some of who asked: “Why did they have to give Flynn a moustache?”.
Users on X have been comparing the new live-action Flynn to the animated, moustache-less character, saying “that ain’t Flynn” and “the beard is not doing it at all.”
Disney lovers don’t see the need for more live-action remakes

via Disney+
Across recent years, Disney has released various remakes of popular animations, such as Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Moana.
With another live-action movie in the makes, people aren’t all happy. One person argued that Tangled “was genuinely close and special to me and I promise there’s no need for a stupid live action,” with another even describing the live action remakes as “money grabs.”
However, others have suggested audiences are mad at the Tangled casting only because “it wasn’t their fancast.”
Responding to the film’s criticism on X, one person argued: “The actors seem exactly like the cartoon come to life so I think everyone is just being mad for the sake of being mad.”
Another person reiterated an important point: “The movie isn’t even OUT yet.”
In my opinion, the film has high potential, but we should probably wait until we’ve seen the film for ourselves before forming strong opinions.
All I can say for now is that, as a Tangled fan, I am very excited.
