Withington pipe burst leaves residents with water troubles

The mains pipe has been overflowing on Mauldeth Road

A burst mains pipe in Withington has been seen spilling water out into the road since Saturday, leaving residents complaining of low water pressure and limited supplies this weekend.

The pipe, on Mauldeth Road, was cordoned off following the incident.

It was seen overflowing well into Sunday afternoon, with a United Utilities spokesperson confirming they were aware of the issue.

A resident of Princess Road complained they had  experienced little to no water since Friday afternoon, and “struggled to take a shower because of the low water pressure.”

Multiple student residents are within the affected area, with many second and third year students moving into their new properties over August.

Others took to Facebook to ask if neighbours were also experiencing the low pressure in their taps.

The spokesperson for United Utilities explained that work had begun on the leak overnight on Saturday (15th August), but would need to continue on Sunday evening.

They were unable to confirm how many houses and residents had been affected by the issue, but did confirm that the area had been temporarily reconnected while investigation was underway.

Videos have been posted in community forums showing the bubbling pipe spilling out into nearby road drainage.

Their spokesperson said they had not received local reports of residents with no water in their properties, and added that “overnight work is planned to minimise disruption to residents.”

A post on Facebook from Saturday saw residents of Mauldeth Road, Ashford Road and Old Moat Lane explaining their cold water was running slow if at all.

Email responses from United Utilities, in the comments of the post, confirm they are “aware that some customers are experiencing no water or poor pressure.”

The spokesperson for the water company said this was not due to prior planned works, and that they “believe every customer is now on supply.”

Updates on the United Utilities website say that: “One of our teams are now scheduled to complete the repair and will be onsite as soon as possible.”
