39 years of memories


The end of term is rapidly approaching and it's time to finally say your heart-felt goodbyes to East Slope. Since the 1970's, East Slope been at the heart of the University of Sussex, providing thousands of students with moments they won't forget.

Before the bar shuts and the last East Sloper departs, we've made a nostalgic timeline of everything East Slope. Grab a beer, put your feet up and enjoy the ride.

1970 – East Slope accommodation constructed

The first wave of East Slopers in 1970 began to make East Slope the place it is today. Hosting wild parties at night followed by watching the sunrise from their roofs; these traditions have remained. East Slope has been the home to many a student, including Billy Idol.

1979 – East Slope bar opened

East Slope circa 1985

Everyone's favourite bar was opened 18 years after the University was opened in 1961. Prior to this, Falmer bar was the host of many on campus events. Did you know that Falmer used to house a club called the Hotbox?

1980's – bar workers got paid in booze

After their shifts, student workers were allegedly paid in alcohol rather than cash. Considering they were already drinking on the job, this wasn't a bad deal.

1985 – East Sloper's ironing board prank

East Slopers have always been the campus jokers at the University of Sussex. Some things never change. Whilst putting ironing boards on roofs isn't the wildest thing East Slope has seen, it may be the weirdest.

1992 – Radiohead free gig

The English rock band hit Sussex uni with a free gig at East Slope bar in 1992. Students flooded into the bar to enjoy an unforgettable night of music.

2006 – the first ever skint night

East Slope bar's wildest and most affordable night, Skint Tuesday's, debuted in 2006. With beers priced at £2.10, Tuesdays were never the same again.

2007 – the Kooks made a surprise appearance

The Brighton pop-rock band performed at our very own East Slope bar in 2007. Although the group were only formed three years prior, they were received extremely well by Sussex students.

2012 – Fatboy Slim Q & A at East Slope bar

In 2012, East Slope bar welcomed the English DJ Fatboy slim for a Q & A. The musician was interviewed by University Radio Falmer about his career and members of the audience offered their own questions.

2014 – East Slope bar ale

Brewed locally in Goldstone Brewery, East Slope bar have previously sold their very own 4.5 per cent ale. Whilst the ale is no longer manufactured, Goldstone are currently making the fan-favourite Seacider.

2015 – the Hatch opened

From 2015, East Slope bar's late night fries destination opened: the hatch. For the past three years, the hatch has been a perfect solution for late night munchies until 3am.

2015 – East Slope welcomed the lead guitarist of Queen

Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen, graced East Slope bar with a Q&A in 2015. The legend and animal rights campaigner visited prior to the 2015 general election to spread his knowledge about animal welfare.

2015 – bean sitting event at East Slope bar

Of all the strange events hosted by East Slope, this must have bean one of the weirdest.

2016 – East Slope bar stock exchange

East Slope stock exchange was a night of madness. Prices of alcohol were changing constantly, and it became every student's dream when Jägerbomb's were £1.

2018 – East Slope bar hosted St Patrick's day

East Slope bar hosted their last ever St Patrick's day earlier this year. They sorted students out with £1 off the first 100 pints sold and 3 for £10 Guinness all day long!

2018 – East Slope reunion

East Slopers reunited at their flat 11 years after leaving. They met up at the bar to discuss their infamous parties and wild antics whilst being at university.
