SUSU Shop will no longer sell a selection of lads’ mags due to poor sales and low demand.

Student unions across the country, such as Lancaster and Sheffield, have banned the sale of lads’ mags citing reasons that they promote lad culture and even encourage rape. SUSU have made it clear that this is not the reason for not stocking them any more.

Poor sales and low demand of mens’ magazines in the Shop have made stocking them unprofitable and the decision to remove them is purely commercial.

Sales of lads’ mags, such as Front, FHM and Loaded have declined over the past few years. Front has halved its sales compared to 2011/12 whereby only 9 have been sold across the last year. FHM sales have also halved where 11 were sold in the same period. Only 2 copies of Loaded have been sold (only 1 copy was sold in 2011/12).

These figures suggest that only 2 magazines are, on average, bought a month.

David Gilani, Union President, stressed that the removal of lads’ mags is in response to poor sales and that the space could be better used. As this is a commercial decision, removing the magazines is not permanent and could well see them return.

If any readers are disappointed with the removal of lads’ mags then they can alternatively pick up a copy of the new RAG naked calendar on sale in the Shop soon.
