Omg, Southampton beat actual Oxford on University Challenge

No this isn’t a joke

Southampton has beaten Oxford Uni’s Balliol college on University Challenge – no, this is not a joke.

In this week’s BBC episode, Oxford were presumably predicted to win – but Southampton University’s team ended up beating them with 210 to 115 points.

Southampton’s team was made up of Ethan Lyon, studying a PhD in film; Magda Steele, studying a PhD in ecology; team captain Dom Belcher, studying a PhD in machine learning; and Elliot Miles, studying a Master’s in marine biology. The team has an average age of 25.

The official university Twitter called it an “amazing win”, and people were very excited, with one user saying they were “really impressed” by the performance and another even thinking that Southampton’s team could win.

One person on Twitter called the performance “cracking”, and another said we “smashed it”.

This series of University Challenge is the last one that will be presented by host Jeremy Paxman, who announced this summer that he will be retiring after hosting the show for 28 years.

He said: “I’ve had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years. I’ve been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and to meet some of the swottier brains in the country. It gives me hope for the future.”

Congrats Southampton! See you in the next round xoxo
