Newcastle’s love for Greggs made official

The North East holds host to the most Greggs in Britain

Recent statistics reveal we have the most Greggs in Britain – and we certainly aren’t complaining.

The toon came out on top for pasties with a greedy 10.8 outlets per 100,000 Geordies. Gateshead were wiping up our crumbs at a close second with nine stores for every 100,000 northerners.

Sunderland were slower for their sausage rolls, ranking 10th with 6.9 bakeries for the same amount of residents.

Everyone loves a sausage roll

Results of the survey revealed there are 31 Greggs in Newcastle (and god bless them all), a meagre 19 in Sunderland and an even weaker 18 in Gateshead.

The Food Standards Agency announced the average for the whole of the country was only 2.7 but we still wouldn’t call ourselves excessive, we are the birthplace of pastry heaven after all.

Just one Greggs of many in Newcastle city centre

Technically London had the most Greggs per head AND the most stores per square mile, but were rightly disqualified from the study because the figures between who was ‘from’ London and who was actually ‘in’ London at the time were too baffling. So the pasties are all ours Newcastle.

337 of all British constituencies contained a Greggs. Our economy may be failing, we may be in masses of national debt, but we will always have Greggs.

WE LOVE GREGGS

Theresa, Newcastle based Greggs employee, said: “There can’t be 31 Greggs in Newcastle. Surely it’s 13? 14? It’s not 31. What survey was it? 31 in Newcastle? Are you sure?

“We do get some pretty weird orders. Yesterday we sent out 50 pasties, 40 sausage rolls and two doughnuts to just one person.”

Luckily I left my order anonymously…
