Newcastle officially added to government Coronavirus watchlist

Cases in the North East are rising

Newcastle has been added to the government’s Coronavirus watchlist this afternoon amid cases rising in the North East.

Gateshead and Sunderland have also been added to the list, as sources confirmed to The Chronicle.

This comes as students return to the city ahead of the beginning of term, starting September 28th.

Spikes have been occurring in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area recently, with the figures showing a rise in new infections from 19 on the 2nd September to 38 new infections on the 5th of September. Yesterday’s figures from Public Health England showed 36 new cases.

Total new cases in the North East rose to 1,762 yesterday, just days after 33 people who attended a football match on the border of Sunderland and County Durham tested positive.
