Permission granted to demolish and rebuild Ricky Road

Debbie Dumpling is outraged

The University’s systematic massacre of cheap and cheerful student accommodation is set to continue with the demolition of Ricky Road.

Newcastle City Council have approved the University’s decision to demolish the 1970s-built shabby-shit Richardson Road.

The Uni will spend nearly £76m on the project, which will start demolition in summer 2016 and complete in September 2018 – meaning current residents will be the last generation of Ricky Roaders.

How the new accommodation will look from Leazes Park

The new Ricky Road will feature nearly 1,300 en-suite bedrooms probably costing more than £120 per week to inhabit – a big difference on the current Ricky Road which is less than £80pw.

Over the years Ricky Road has played host to many legendary events, such as the appearance of Debbie Dumpling.

If bare brick walls could talk, the ones at Ricky Road would have some legendary stories to tell.

The uni sports centre will also be expanded, providing “enhanced facilities and a new sports sciences building, in order to facilitate a new degree program; Exercise Biomedicine”, although only outline permission has been given for this – meaning it is part of a later phase.

Paul Bandeen, Head of Residences at Newcastle University, said: “Newcastle University welcomes this decision as it will allow us to replace outdated accommodation with the high quality facilities today’s students need and expect.”
