Serious collision leaves 19-year-old man fighting for his life

A 19-year-old was hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday morning, around half a mile north of Newcastle Uni campus.

Northumbria Police released a statement yesterday morning saying the incident “happened between a pedestrian and a car at 1.26am in the early hours on Sunday, March 1.

“The pedestrian, a 19-year-old man, for reasons yet to be established collided in the carriageway with a VW Passat car travelling southbound towards the city centre.  He suffered serious injuries.

“The injured man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he is receiving treatment, he has what are described as life threatening injuries and his condition is described as critical but stable.”

The Great North Road was closed for around three hours while the scene was inspected. Police say the casualty was initially treated at the scene, but was taken off to the RVI.

It’s not the first incident this year on the Great North Road involving pedestrians and cars. At the start of February a pedestrian was knocked down in Jesmond along the road. A car collided with a man in his 20s, and the casualty was taken hospital.

Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the area on Sunday night and witnessed the collision is asked to contact Northumbria Police.
