Meet the Brookes students performing at the Pink Ribbon charity event

They’re raising money for breast cancer

This week a handful of musically talented Brookes students are taking to the stage in Jericho to raise money and awareness for the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Five students from a range of subjects and years will be performing a small charity gig, with tickets costing £5 and all profits going to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Pink Ribbon describe themselves as “a grant making trust with a mission to fund projects and provide financial support to UK charities which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from/have been affected by breast cancer or who work to advance the understanding of breast cancer.”

Charlie Hughes, Geography and International Relations, 3rd Year

“There are a number of different aspects for why this event is important. I’ve done a few gigs in Oxford now and they’re always so well received. People like something different to the normal mundane, highly inebriated, screaming little freshers nights out, often ending up with a kebab or a bloody nose. This event is far more civilized and fun.

Channel the screaming girls, boozy fellas, groovy sounds of live music and you have the perfect formula! Plus all proceeds are going to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Everyone in some way shape or form has been affected by Breast Cancer and this is a great opportunity for everyone to get behind the cause and have a good night in the process”.

Poppy Gunnerud, Philosophy and Music, 3rd Year

“I’m doing it as its for a cause that is so prominent nowadays, and close to home. Cancer is such a massive killer, any support we can offer we should. I am taking part because I love music and want to perform so any opportunity I can I will!”

Conar Hicke, Business and Management, 3rd Year

“I’ve been involved with these music events for last few years, originally running an event called the Cowley Retreat Live Lounge. I think any form of charity work, or raising awareness are a great cause and that its refreshing to know that people are interested in doing both at Oxford Brookes. The ability for students to showcase their talents at a packed venue is also great. Not a lot of other universities can offer that”.

Max Seabold, Business and Management, 1st Year

“I’m really looking forward to taking part in this event as I have a lot of love for events that raise money along with awareness. I have taken part in many charity concerts when I used to be at school and it’s just a nice thought that you’re doing something to help, no matter how much is raised. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything musical since leaving school so I look forward to getting back behind the mic and showing what I can do.

Music has always been part of my life, mostly with musical theatre and classical stuff. I have been playing the piano from a young age but have taught myself guitar in the past two years in order to perform more modern covers”.

Hermione Duncan, 2nd Year, Politics and International Relations

“I think the event is important because it will raise awareness and money for cancer research. Cancer can affect so many people, either with them suffering from it, or family members, friends or even people in the public eye such as David Bowie or Alan Richman. I’ve always enjoyed music and singing, and I think it will be a good night to enjoy some good local music as well as raising money for a good cause”.
