Immigrant Cleaners Seized at Wheatley

Illegal Brookes employers to be deported.

Eight Brookes employees have been arrested in dawn-raids on suspicion of working illegally.

The cleaners were apprehended on Wheatley Campus at 6:45am by Home Office immigration enforcement officers last month.

All hailing from South America, the group worked for the Solo Service Company, which Brookes employs to clean its rooms, halls and corridors.

HR director at Brookes, Bob Price said: “We understand that authorities are reviewing the immigration status of individuals employed by the cleaning contracting company Solo. The university has co-operated in providing a space for interviews to be conducted as part of this process.”

Five of the Solo employees are being detained before being deported.

These poor people traded the sun of Sao Paolo for the winter of Wheatley and the parties of Paraguay for the monotony of Marston. They did this to clean-up after us, the ungrateful students of Oxford Brookes.

They mopped our mess, they scrubbed our sinks, they cleaned our vomit and much more. They provided a service that will be sorely missed here at Brookes. And I, for one, wish them well.
