A male tourist was saved from drowning on West Sands beach last week.

A lifeboat arrived just in time to save the tourist who had gotten into difficulty on West Sands beach in St Andrews. The middle-aged man became stranded after walking out onto the sand before the tide then rose behind him at the mouth of the River Eden on West Sands.

The incident occurred around lunchtime on Friday 23rd January, and led to the St Andrews coastguard team and the Broughty Ferry Lifeboats taking part in the rescue after the man phoned his wife, who alerted the emergency services.

A spokesman for Broughty Ferry Lifeboat said that the boats arrived just in time and warned about the danger of the rising tide.

The spokesman said “We would remind people to be aware of tides and to always check with the coastguard before going out walking on sandbanks.”
