Want to know which is the naughtiest halls, how many Sotonians have had an STI or where the most popular place to shag on campus is? Worry not as we’ve done maths to give you the low down on Southampton’s sexual shenanigans. Over 1000 responses later, we’ve crunched the numbers, analysed the data and put it into some lovely graphs for you.

Background

We had 1046 responses for our survey (doubling our target) with roughly a 50/50 split between guys and girls with 533 and 512 responses respectively.

Here’s the break down for how many responses we got by faculty (left) and halls (right), click on images for higher resolution:

Sexual Partners

Of all of you who answered, the average number of sexual partners students have had since starting uni is 4.11, with exactly 50% of students having only done the deed with between 1 and 3 people. 12% of students are yet to see any action in the sack.

We calculated the naughtiest halls and having an average of 5.72 sexual partners since starting at Southampton, it’s Connaught, closely followed by Erasmus Park in Winchester – although only four students responded from there, so take that as you will. Finishing in last place is Archers Road with an average of 3.19 partners.

We asked which subjects you thought put out the most and you rated Humanities and medicine and health sciences top of the tables.

But which faculty actually gets the most action? In first place is Business and Law with an average of 4.9 sexual partners since starting uni and followed by Humanities students at 4.41. Few teaching contact hours probably contributed to this result.

Surprisingly, physical and applied sciences (physics and ECS) and engineering students weren’t at the bottom of the tables for number of sexual partners, despite being rated as the subjects which people thought got the least action.

Virginity

9% of students are still wearing their V plates whilst 59% of you lost your virginity between the age of 16 and 18 whilst 0.7% of students popped their cherries over the age of 22.

Sexual Orientation

Of the 1046 students who answered, 87% identified themselves as straight, 7.6% said they were bisexual whilst the remaining 5% declared themselves as gay or lesbian.

Contraception

Fortunately for us, 93% of students said they use contraception when having sex with 52% using it all the time but 7% never using it.

Of those who used contraception, the most common methods to use were condoms at 81%.13% of girls were on the pill and 40% of girls used both the pill and condoms during sex.

Other forms of contraception mentioned were:

Being a physics student,

Having a vasectomy,

Whatever Jesus used.

We also found that 44% of students used two forms of contraception during sex and 2% used three.

For the ladies, we asked how many were taking the contraceptive pill with 51% of the lasses currently on it. However, when it comes to the emergency morning after pill, 42% had taken it.

STIs

Now for the bit which you’ve probably been wanting to know: STIs. We asked if anyone had had an STI and 6.7% of you answered with Yes and 10% thought they should get tested.

Watch out, there’s a 6.7% chance of catching an STI from a Soton student.

Of those 6.7% who have had an STI, unsurprisingly chlamydia was the most common at 52% and then genital warts in second at 17%, closely followed by herpes at 13%.

Interestingly, of the 71 people who’ve had an STI, 30% have had two and 5% have had chlamydia twice.

Two’s company, three’s a crowd. Or is it?

Well, yes it is according to our survey. 84% of you lot said you’ve never had a threesome before. Of those who have, 34 respondents have done the dirty as 2 guys and 1 girl with 66 of you having done it as 2 girls and 1 guy. 6.2% of students have engaged with more than 3 people at a time.

We must also apologise for not adapting this question to include an option for 3 guys or 3 girls. We’ll remember to include this in next year’s survey!

Anal

Of those surveyed, only 38% of Southampton students have had anal sex.

Porn

We asked if students thought watching porn influenced their sex lives and 41% said it didn’t although 20% weren’t sure.

Masturbation

Next up we asked how often Southampton students partook in self-pleasure and 21% said they didn’t do it, whilst 30% do it regularly at twice a week. 7% of students told us that they did it more than once a day.

Blowjobs

When it comes to blow-jobs, 45% of you swallowed whilst 41% don’t do them at all, no surprises there due to the high number of straight men who answered the survey.

Campus Confessions

We wanted to know what you lot got up to on campus and we received some truly hilarious responses. Firstly, 26% of students have fantasised over a lecturer.

Only 12% of students have had sex on campus (not including halls) with 35% of it happening in the SUSU building or The Cube. 10% of students have also had sex in the big lecture theatre in the Physics building and 31% of respondents have also had sex in Hartley Library. So, the most popular place to have sex on campus is in the SUSU building, probably not the kind of engagement SUSU were after.

Next up was where people would most want to have sex on campus and we had some cracking responses for this. 15% said they didn’t want to have sex on campus however the most popular place to want to is Hartley Library at 53% followed by in a lecture theatre at 7%. Other interesting places where students would like to do the deed are on the Vice Chancellor’s desk at 22 responses and in the Sabb Office with 15 responses. Those comfy beanbags in SUSU were also a potential shagging spot and featured in a lot of responses.

Here are a few responses we received that cropped up a few times:

Level 5 of the library. There are two things that give me an erection, one is history and the other is attractive females. Why not combine them?,

On Shane Murphy’s desk,

On my supervisor’s desk and I would love to do it somewhere on the intercourse. For the lols as the urban youth would say,

In Dr BJ Tester’s office,

Desk in the library – specifically, one with the ‘No laptops, food or drink’ sign.

In the Student Services building as you would have the time as it takes so long queuing up.

Of all your sexual shenanigans, we wondered what your parents thought of your actions. 500 of you said that they would most certainly be shocked at your antics whilst 16% thought their parents wouldn’t care what you got up to and 36% thought their parents wouldn’t be shocked.

We asked you guys for your most embarrassing sexual story and we received over 300 of them. Sticking it in the wrong hole, being walked in on by a relative or a housemate and doing things at the wrong time of the month cropped up quite a lot, but here’s a selection of the best:

I had to do the walk of shame not realising I had cum on my face, social jumper and my hair. Vile.

I guess the time my flatmate and I swapped rooms, I pulled someone at Sobar, brought them back, she looked around the room and asked “Haven’t we done it before?”

Being walked in on by the room inspection ladies in Halls.

First boyfriend thrusting away for a good ten minutes before I had to stop him and explain “it isn’t in, I’ve still got my pants on…”

Being far too drunk to balance properly, I went to lower myself onto my boyfriend’s penis, cowgirl style and I lost my footing, landed awkwardly and literally broke his willy. He couldn’t have sex for a very long time and I was slightly mortified…

Finally, we wanted to know what you thought was being done to promote safe sex around campus. 41% of you thought SUSU could do more to promote safe sex whilst 28% didn’t know if enough was being done and 31% said it was good enough as it is.

Thanks to everyone who took part in our survey and extra thanks to those who gave us cracking responses. And here’s the standard line on sex: keep safe. Nobody wants genitals warts or an unplanned child so always use a condom. SUSU and the doctors’ surgery on campus both give them out for free.
