UPRAWR over Breaking Bad themed night

‘Drug’ night causes controversy

Last night’s Breaking Bad themed party has drawn criticism over its trivialisation of drug use.

The night was put on by the club brand UPRAWR in The Venue at the Students’ Union.

Facebook posts to promote the night showed images of blue methamphetamine-like crystals alongside captions stating: “Come and get your meth on this Friday” and “legit meth coming straight into your hands”.

The night was based on Breaking Bad, the hit US show about a chemistry teacher cooks crystal-meth in order to fund his cancer treatment.

UPRAWR organiser Lewis Felstead, said: “We have no intention to glamorise meth. We take a zero-tolerance attitude to drug-use and all our advertising does state that it’s not actually meth.”

He said that the substances being given away were just sweets.

The event  received further criticism from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust – who suggested the event glamorised images of meth and did not reflect the true consequences of drug use.
