More disruption to lectures as collapsed Sherrington roof still not repaired

It’s still broken

Lecturers have been forced to divide classes in half as repair work on the Sherrington Building roof continues to cause chaos.

Stumped lecturers are splitting students so one half are taught as normal while the other half watch a live video podcast of the lecture next door.

Reconstruction on the collapsed roof was supposed to be completed on Monday.

The rear half of the lecture theatre is still sectioned off by red and white barricade tape, signifying a possible hazard.

Lecturers in highly populated courses such as Electronic Engineering and Psychology have been left with no other option but to divide classes between two lecture theatres.

While the lecturers teach in one theatre, the remaining students will watch a live video link of the lecture in the next room.

In an email sent to all staff and students associated with the building, the University said: “The rear half of Sherrington LT2 remains out of use as a precautionary measure on the advice of the Safety Adviser’s Office, and will be unusable for some time, probably a number of weeks.”

Second year Engineering student Will, who experienced the bizarre changes this week, did not agree the University had made an appropriate decision.

He said: “You’d think for nine grand a year, they could spare us a lecture theatre that had a roof.

“It’s not fair half of us have to be herded into the next room, without a teacher.”

A Psychology lecturer at the University said in another email: “This temporary solution is far from ideal, but it is the least bad alternative we have found.”

It is still unclear as to when the construction work will be complete and lecture theatre will be safe to hold full capacity.
