Lincoln SU releases Welcome Week 2020 line-up

A roller disco? I’m there

Lincoln’s Welcome Week is back and extremely different from what we were expecting. But we’re still in the times of a pandemic so the Students’ Union has put together a series of safe yet fun events for all Lincoln students to get involved in.

The University of Lincoln Students Union (ULSU) has planned a massive line-up of events for new students all across the week from 9th October to 18th October. Lincoln’s Welcome Week had to be delayed to October this year as the University deferred the new academic year amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The university has introduced one-way systems for some outdoor and indoor routes, corridors, staircases, and building entrances/exits to create social distancing. These will be set out in ‘loops’ and clearly sign-posted, so you can still navigate campus easily.  The SU has created a series of safe and entertaining events for new students and here’s what we know so far.

Welcome Week starts with The Big Quiz at the Engine Shed where the SU plans on using the SpeedQuizzing smartphone option to conduct the quiz rather than the usual pen and paper.

The Twilight Cafe’s late-night event promises a quiet evening with a warm cup of cocoa, and some like-minded friends to make in the campus’s Tower Bar. The SU’s Student Order app is the core communication tool for the event and has been successfully updated.

Day 2 brings around everyone’s favourite Shrek to the Open Air Cinema event starting at 7pm, although it requires prior registration it is free for all. In the previous years, the open-air cinema event showcased movies like Mamma Mia and The Greatest Showman.

Another event being hosted by the SU is the Bicycle Tour of Lincoln. Students can join the Student Leaders for the ultimate tour of Lincoln, visiting all the places vital to know about as a student. Lincoln’s famous Street Food Market makes a return again this year. This features various stalls from local vendors and exhibits crafts for sale from small business owners.

The Platform will feature a series of retro-style gaming booths, where multiplayer or solo games are available for free. The Tower Bar will showcase the England vs Denmark game on 14th of October, wherein the bar will be open till 1am. The SU students fayres will all be held virtually to allow for social distancing.

The SU is also hosting a Table Top Escape Room event. Students can bring a team of friends to this event and work together to solve a series of puzzles and mysteries where there are prizes to be won. Another event to look forward to is the Roller Disco, a skate-and-dance gathering where participants are provided with skates and safety equipment at the venue by the SU upon purchase of a ticket online.

The highlight of the week-long festival is multi-award-winning comedian, Russell Kane, who will headline a night of live comedy at the SU, and is being hosted by Danny McLoughlin.

A spokesperson for Lincoln’s Students’ Union said: “When planning all of our Welcome Week events, we have put careful consideration into making sure they are all in line with latest Government Guidelines on social distancing and social group sizes, within our licensed premise.

“This includes implementing COVID-secure practices across Towers, The Swan and Engine Shed including installing hand sanitiser stations, table service, regular cleaning, and staff members wearing appropriate PPE.

“Students can be reassured that we will have rigorous processes in place to make sure that they will be able to enjoy all of our events safely and in-line with the latest Government guidelines.”
