Opal Court owners enter administration

Opal Court owners enter administration, leaving residents concerned.

The owners of Opal Court have recently entered administration, leading to uncertainty for residents.

Administrators from Ernst and Young were called last week, after the UK-wide Opal Group struggled to manage over £800 million worth of reported debts. The company owns and manages the halls on Lancaster Road, popular with Leicester Uni students.

Opal residents caught by surprise

Leicester University yesterday updated Opal residents with a bulletin on their website. It appears the university is still monitoring the situation, but has promised it will “step in to look after the interests of our students” should the situation worsen.

One Opal Court student, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Tab she was “worried about next year”, having agreed to stay at Opal. She also complained about the “lack of information” on the issue and what it might mean for Opal residents.

The University has advised concerned students to get in touch with Welfare or the Accommodation Office.
