Meet the Brookes student behind Live Lounge at The Varsity Club

He organises live music for Teenage Cancer Trust

Oli Knell has organised a night that will finally leave you with a good taste in your mouth. Raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust, Oli puts on a night of live music at Varsity.

The Tab Brookes sat down with him to find out more.

What drew you to the charity that you have chosen to support?

I chose the Teenage Cancer Trust as cancer is something that a lot of people, including me, have had a negative experience of and can bring back quite sharp memories. It’s a great cause and already is looking to have over 200 people in attendance!

Why did you settle on Varsity?

When you think about it, it becomes clear how few Brookes students actually go there, and it’s such a great place it’s a shame people miss out on it. Given that is has a panoramic view of the Oxford skyline, it really is an attractive place. Plus, it gives a chance for the ladies and gentlemen attending to dress up.

You mentioned live music in the events description?

Basically we have five really talented acts lined up for the people coming to enjoy, four are mainly singer-songwriters. They each give their own unique take on their music that really lets their passion shine through. I’m really pleased to announce Kelly Barnes is playing, she has come all the way up from London. Also, we have a great conclusion to our line up. The Band Logic Lane is playing and they have a great indie-funk sound going for them and they’ll have people on their feet for sure.

Any idea on the numbers?

Well, anything up to capacity would be great! At the moment, we have about 250 people coming, but many more are hoped through word of mouth. Even 200 would be good as that would raise around £1,000.

This all sounds really promising, anything else you’d like to add to sum up?

This is once in a while event and I know people always love helping great causes, but also it’s just a chance to dress up, dance and listen to some great live music. Also some great value drinks from Varsity!

As Oli said, you can tick all the boxes with the dressing up, drinks and live music but also, and most importantly, the money will be going to a cause that has affected in some way almost everyone we know.
