Brookes SU Chasing Early Morning Booze Licence

Vodka could soon be on the breakfast menu after Brookes apply for early morning alcohol licence.

Oxford Brookes has submitted an application that means that you might be able to enjoy a drink with your breakfast from as early as 9am.

The new licence would allow the student union bar, in the new John Henry Brookes building, to serve alcohol from 9am to 11pm from Sundays to Thursday and 9am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Booze o’clock for Brookes

However the new licence will be primarily for official functions such as graduation ceremonies. Although the university already holds an early morning licence for the whole of the Gipsy lane campus, parts of the new development are not yet covered as building had not finished at the time of Brookes’ initial application.

Anti-fun campaigner: Cllr. Susan Brown

As with all things involving students and alcohol, there have been concerns expressed by those living opposite campus. It has been suggested that permission to drink so early could result in ‘childish’ behaviour as well as excessive amounts of noise.

City Councillor and full-time killjoy Susan Brown said: “I am aware that there are some objections. There are issues particularly around people leaving the area and being a nuisance to the neighbours.”

However the Student Union president, Joel Holmes, was quick to reassure those living nearby.

He described the new bar as a calm place where students could have a quiet drink and further stated that it would not be holding club nights.
