Bournemouth SU Summer Ball cancelled due to COVID-19

Organisers said it was ‘no longer viable’ to keep planning the event

The Bournemouth SU Summer ball has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement came in the form of a Facebook post, in which organisers said “it was no longer viable” to hold the event in light of recent circumstances.

We realise this will be a real blow to some final year students – but there will be nothing to stop you coming back in 2021 to celebrate,” it said.

The full statement reads: “SUBU Bournemouth are very sorry to announce that the SUBU Summer Ball 2020 will have to be cancelled.

“Following the new government measures announced this week and in times of such uncertainty, it was no longer viable to keep planning it.

“These are going to be difficult times for some people and for SUBU and we have decided to protect the organisation’s core aims for the next few months as things develop. There will always be another year and we will start planning 2021 just as soon as we can. We realise this will be a real blow to some final year students – but there will be nothing to stop you coming back in 2021 to celebrate.

“We have sold around half of the tickets for this year’s event. Those who hold tickets for the event will receive an automated refund over the next 14 days, you will not need to contact us.

“There will also inevitably be difficult financial implications as a result of this cancellation for SUBU, our student staff and our suppliers. We will be working hard to return to business as usual as soon as the situation allows. In the meantime, we are battening down our financial hatches to see us through this period as best we can.”
