Union street piper dies

Local legend, William Daniel, died aged 41

Tributes have flooded in for William Daniel a.k.a the ‘Aberdeen Piper’, who has died at 41.

Mr Daniel played the pipes regularly by the statue, opposite Trinity Centre on Union Street.

Elliot, a second year Aberdeen student said: “It was very sad indeed.

“His piping was a staple of Aberdeen life on Union Street.”

And another student was also shocked by his death: “It is truly saddening to lose such a prominent part of Aberdonian culture.”

Everyone knew William Daniel as the piper who persevered through all wind and wet winters too.

But always in a simple, kilt suit, socks and trainers.

Caitlin, another student from the city said: “The thing that was really admirable about him was how he would busk in all weathers at time of the year in his slightly-too-short kilt.”

But, William Daniel was no stranger to alcohol.

Law grad Joanna said: “He used to pipe there day in, day out and yet his piping never improved.

“Maybe it was something to do with his bag of whisky he always had by his side.”

Now, Aberdeen city has lost one of its more memorable faces, since his passing on Wednesday 3rd of September.
