The Aberdeen Tab is looking for new writers and we want YOU
Best part: no experience required!
Are you an aspiring journalist? A hilarious writer? A jokes meme lord or a film-maker? If you are, The Aberdeen Tab wants you to join our team.
The Aberdeen Tab is written by Aberdeen students, for Aberdeen students.
If you’re unsure about what The Tab is, or how to get involved, you’ll find all the information below:
What is The Tab?
The Tab is a student news site with over ten million monthly readers. As a student writer, your stories will be shared on The Aberdeen Tab Facebook page, to a readership of thousands of Aberdeen students – the best are shared across all of our pages, and can reach readers all over the country and if you’re super lucky, across the globe.
We break the biggest stories on campus. Last year the Aberdeen Tab covered the aftermath of the AU Hockey Club curry social that caused £1,400 worth of damage. Other stories we covered included the approval of the Aberdeen Life Ethics Society, and subsequent approval of the Aberdeen Pro-Choice Society.
Why should I write for The Tab and not somewhere else?
Writing for The Aberdeen Tab, your stories will reach thousands of student readers, and while your stories won’t be printed, you’ll get a much better understanding of how modern news media actually works.
The team works with an Assistant Editor based at Tab HQ in London. They provide training in the basics of reporting, and quality advice on how to make your writing stand out you won’t get anywhere else.
Tab alumni frequently go on to work for famous publications all over the world, including VICE, The Times, and Vogue. Former Tab student writers go on to jobs at The Telegraph, The Sun, and Cosmopolitan.
How can I get involved?
It’s simple. If you’re keen you can:
It’s a chilled and social set-up.
If news isn’t your thing, there’s loads of other things we do. Our student writers produce some of the funniest features you’ll ever read. Some of our best include the five stages of standing in the Union Street taxi queue, the best guides to acing being a student in Aberdeen, like where to study if the SDR is full, and our collective hatred of Aberdeen’s monster seagulls.
We’re particularly encouraging students from minority backgrounds to sign up. If you feel like journalism isn’t typically accessible for people from your background, please do get in touch via Facebook or Instagram.
No experience is needed, and you’ll have guidance from experienced editors to get you up and running, whether news or features is your thing. The process is simple. You don’t even need to apply – just get drop us a message if you’re interested. We’re holding an online meeting next Monday to tell you everything you need to know and get you writing.
If you have any questions, or can’t make the open meeting, message our Facebook page or our Instagram!
