12 times Christmas songs summed up being a Sussex student

All I want for Christmas is Charcoal Grill

As soon as the clock struck midnight on December 1, we all know that it became Christmas. Let’s be real, the best part of the festive season is the catchy music and the fact you need no excuse to blast them full volume for a month straight.

While we all know the lyrics, did you know that they’re actually a lot more relevant for Sussex university students? So now you can sing them in even more confidence, practically as our university national anthems. Here are some of the highlights.

1. “Do you recognise me? It’s been a year, it doesn’t surprise me”

Talking to your lecturers and course mates after a year of Zoom lectures with your microphone and camera off is going to be an interesting experience, to say the least.

2. “Does your granny always tell ya that the old songs are the best?”

This is specifically aimed at those with those “granny” flatmates, the ones who exclusively play older cheesy tunes in the kitchen…. we get it, ABBA made some good music…..

3. “Dancing and prancing in jingle bell square”

Swap this out with Churchill square and this just sums up the pre-and post-night out experiences in Brighton.

4. “Oh the weather outside is frightful”

Typical day in Brighton really, being by the beach means the weather is always crazy and prone to change at any given moment.

5. “This year I’ve got to be smart”

This classic Ariana banger, Santa Tell Me really captures what it means to be a student right now. By the new year we will make all these resolutions to get our grades up even though we know it’ll never happen.

6. “Mum and dad can hardly wait for school to start again”

Hands down the most relatable one. You’re bothering your parents so much for the month you’re home with your ~self care time~ that you just end up relying on them for everything.

7. “Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer”

Obviously, this refers to our classic Brighton Christmas lights, where else would you find “BAUBLE” in massive letters hanging above the street? Never change, Brighton.

8. “I really can’t stay / I’ve got to go away”

Especially accurate for every time you try to turn down a Christmas film sesh with your family for uni work…. and end up watching the film instead of being productive.

9. “Been an angel all year … think of all the fun I’ve missed”

Sums up how we all feel post-2020 and all the lockdown rules…. help us out a bit here Santa, and make 2021 a good one.

10. “You took my dreams from me when I first found you”

This one goes out to all the seagulls who’ve stolen chips/doughnuts/you name it. May their crimes never be forgotten.

11. “All I want for Christmas is you”

Shoutout to all the takeaways we’ll miss by not being in Brighton over the festive season.. this one goes out to AA Charcoal Grill especially.

12. “And so this is Christmas, and what have we done?”

Hint… nothing. All Sussex students get this frightful thought at precisely 11pm on Christmas day when we realise that all that work we’ve been putting off for festive reasons has absolutely no excuse anymore.
