The Stand can confirm that on Friday night the University of St Andrews Conservative Association burnt an effigy of Barack Obama on East Sands. This is not the first time that the society have burnt a ‘heretic’: past effigies have included Gordon Brown and Hazel Blears. However, burning an effigy of America’s first black president has led some to question the racial sensitivity of the political group.

Hannah, a 4th Year International Relations student commented, “It just seems wrong on so many levels, particularly given the history of racist lynchings.”

The Stand has asked the President of the Conservative Association, Matthew Marshall and David Graves, the Director of Students Development and Activities to comment.
