Finally, after what seems like a lifetime, the Union (or at least half of it) is open for business and proving that their skills go beyond alcoholic beverages.

As we all know the Rectors Cafe has been open for a while now, and although it hasn’t got the largest selection, it is perfect for some quick snacks. With a range of panini’s and cakes, students can grab a bite to eat between lectures and not have to feel guilty about destroying their student loan too early into the semester.

It is not only the cafe that is venturing towards new horizons, as the Main Bar is now showcasing a new food range. If you are already sick of cooking, being limited to frozen pizza and pasta sauces, this is the ideal place, with food ranging from breakfast rolls, light bites and main meals. The menu mostly consists of student favourites such as burgers, which is perfect for those days when pressing buttons on a microwave seems like too much work. When we asked the Student Association Director of Services, Leon O’Rourke, about the reasoning behind it, he told us that the plan was to provide good food at low prices to ensure “that a good hearty lunch need not take you out too far or cost you the Earth”. At the moment, food is only being served until 3pm but there are talks about extending this.

This is the latest development to come out of our new and improved Union. Although there are still a few builders hanging around and work is still ongoing behind the scenes, the new spaces are on the up and the availability of spicy chicken and fries are certainly gaining my approval.
