Accommodation has long been, and will continue to be, one of the most controversial and frustrating issues in St Andrews. As the fresher intake increased over the last few years, a supply/demand problem arose, which inevitably created a lack of spaces in University Managed Accommodation and later the private sector. The fierce competition for places in hall and in flats has ruined friendships, threatened university careers and for anyone who was at the Accommodation meeting last March – has garnered a sense of injustice in the student body.

There have been band-aids over the years, and one of the best ones has been the University Accommodation Bursaries. Inaugurated last year, they have grown by 140% to a fund of around £150,000. These bursaries provide the support to those who missed the net for affordable university accommodation and are struggling to make ends meet. Applications for the Accommodation Bursaries opened last week and if you feel like you are struggling financially I would whole-heartedly encourage you to apply. The bursaries made a real difference to students’ lives last year and they will do so again this year: one hundred £1000 bursaries for undergrads and fifteen £2,000 bursaries for postgrads; I know from my own experiences that this can really make a difference.

Accommodation Bursaries are great but prevention is better than cure. What has been released this week is an Accommodation Survey created by your SRC Accommodation Team that can change the landscape of accommodation in St Andrews and provide a legacy for the future generations of St Andrews students.

Speaking to Association President, Freddie Fforde, he said, “accommodation is my number one issue; it’s what comes up as a concern with every student. Through this survey, we are giving the chance for the student body to regain their voice and change the future of Accommodation in the town forever. I like the sound of that.” He explained, “I sit on the Residential Strategy Working Group (RSWG) with a number of other members from the University. This group provides long-term guidance on Accommodation policy and they have asked for student input… We need as many students as possible to complete it to provide a true reflection of the student body’s view.”

I’ve not been here long, but I’m pretty sure there has never been a chance to pass your views to the university so directly and with such impact. We have the chance to shape the future of Accommodation within St Andrews. This is the chance we’ve been waiting for, so please don’t pass it up.
