Man’s body found in Southampton Common lake
Another tragedy in Soton Common
Police have launched an investigation after a man's body was found in Ornamental Lake in the centre of Southampton Common. The man, who is yet to be identified, was found before 9am this morning.
Police officers were quickly at the scene after a member of the public discovered the body. The Daily Echo reported that the death is being treated as "unexplained but not suspicious" according to a spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary, and the man's next of kin has not yet been informed.
Southampton Common's weekly parkrun was abruptly cancelled five minutes before it was due to begin, following the incident. Hundreds of people were lined up, ready to start, when the announcement was made.
Parkrun organisers tweeted:
"Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of our control, we were unable to hold today’s parkrun. This was due to a serious incident on another part of the Common and with the emergency vehicles requiring access, we made the decision to cancel the event."
A police cordon was placed around a sizeable area of the common to mark the crime scene. However the cordon has since been lifted.
The incident occurred less than a month after a man's body was found in another part of the common, near the Old Cemetery.
