Explosion and Fire at New Mayflower Halls Site

UPDATE 16:20-According to the fire chief the incident was an accident.

UPDATE 15:20-Firefighters have left the scene.

UPDATE 14:17-It is believed that the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder on the roof of the building.

Fire crews remain in the scene.

A massive fire has broken out at the University of Southampton’s new city centre Mayflower Halls site at around 11:40 am.

Huge plumes of smoke are billowing from the building site, which is next to Southampton Central train station. It is reported that an explosion occurred.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue have said all persons are accounted for. Ambulance services have said there are no casualties but are remaining at the site.

At 12:55, Hampshire Fire Rescue have said flames were put out and firefighters were cutting away debris to prevent re-ignition.

At the height of the blaze there were 15 fire crews from St Marys, Redbridge and Hightown amounting to a total of 90 firefighters at the scene.

The fire started on the 16th floor where people were working at the time but the cause is not yet known.

The new halls site is due to open in September of this year and is due to hold over 1,100 students.

The University is aware of the fire at the construction site in West Park Road, Southampton. Emergency Services are on site. We are in contact with the building contractor Osborne, who are managing the situation.
