The top dog of Southampton University, Professor Don Nutbeam has seen a pay rise of £17k.

Last year, the VC’s salary was £277,000 but has since risen by 5.7% to £294,000 in 2012/2013. Don, who lives in a University owned mansion residence in Chilworth, also received £37,600 to a pension fund.

Prof Nutbeam’s pay packet is decided by the University’s remuneration committee, which reports to the University Council and is in line with other Russell Group vice-chancellors. His base pay has increased once since taking up the job in 2009.

A University spokesperson told the Soton Tab:

The University of Southampton is a leading UK teaching and research institution with over 23,000 students and 5,000 members of staff. It is appropriate that the vice-chancellor of such a large, complex and international institution should be competitively remunerated.

In comparison, the Vice Chancellor of Solent University (Professor Van Gore) was paid £241,663 in 2011-12. Solent has 1,258 staff and nearly half the students as UoS at 12,523.

This news comes at a time when academic and support staff went on strike twice over the autumn term over pay disputes. It is believed that 140 staff at the University earn below the ‘living wage’ and have had their pay cut 13% in real terms.

The strike on 31st October
