10 Northumbria Master’s you’ve probably never heard of

Bet you wish you were doing one of them

There’s some strange courses out there.

People often ask what you’re doing after uni. Are you planning on going out into the real world and starting your career, or staying on to do a Master’s?

Well, if your degree’s not been exactly what you were expecting and you fancy studying something else post-graduation (and let’s face it, for lots of us that’s true), Northumbria’s got stacks of post-grad courses you can take.

Here’s our pick of the 10 most bizarre:

Cultural Event Management (MA)

You’ll be looking into “the ways events define society and culture, providing a sense of place, belonging and wilder purpose”. It promises as innovative approach to creative and cultural leadership, including operational and strategic management with a specialist focus.

Creative Writing (MA)

For all those budding novelists out there this one’s a winner. It’s supposed to “enhance your employability both in relation to commissioned and published writing” and promises to introduce you to key aspects of story-telling. Sign us up!

Cultural Heritage Management (MA)

You can do this one from home, how nice. As either a one or two year course, you will explore contemporary cultural and social relationships with the past. This somehow includes memories, practices and artistic expressions and values of people and places.

Information and Library Management Postgraduate (Diploma/MA/MSc)

Planning on working in a library? Well, as luck would have it, we’ve thought of you too. Learn about the “dynamic” role of information and library work in the “information society and knowledge-based economy” whilst improving your effective storage skills.

Luxury Brand Management (MA)

Apparently this one’s starting in September, so get those applications in! We’re still unsure if you’ll be learning about Gucci or Lux soap, but you’ll definitely be doing it luxuriously. We do know you’ll be taught about media distribution, markets and customers, and globalisation, so it’ll surprise us if all their places haven’t already gone.

Microelectronic and Communication Engineering (MSc)

A tantalising choice between 12 and 16 month courses will see you look at the communication systems that enable us to use our phones, laptops and tablets. You’ll also study “advanced embedded system technologies, digital design automation, and silicon electronic design”. Fun, right?

Multidisciplinary Innovation (MA/MSc)

Sounds naughty. It basically teaches that an idea isn’t really just yours; it’s your mate’s idea too. They say Multidisciplinary Innovation “relies on individual growth and a willingness to work with others to venture into the unknown”. You can study in Hong Kong though, which sounds quite nice.

Pipeline Integrity Management (MSc)

You can try your hand at this one from home too, luckily. Learn about oil and gas with this Master’s in partnership with Penspen Ltd who apparently have 3,500,000km of pipe lines around the world (phwarr). The pipes are getting old though, which is where you come in – you’ll be taught pipe safety and security of ageing pipelines. Oh.

Psychoanalytical Observational Studies (MA)

The course was pioneered by the Tavistock Clinic in the early 1970’s and Northumbria’s one of a few to host it. Aimed at young professionals working with children, young people and their carers who are “interested in applying detailed observation and a psychoanalytic framework in their professional work”. Sounds very techy mind.

Preventive Conservation (MA)

After graduating you can apparently get a job as a preventative conservation officer, an environmental manager, or a collections manager in a museum, gallery or historic building. You’ll learn the most appropriate strategies for storage, display and transportation. Bet you regret doing that Fashion degree now, right?

So there you have it. Ten Northumbria post-grad courses you’ve most likely never actually heard of. Beat the crowds, apply today! Or get a job, the choice is yours.
