Haute cuisine: The revolutionary new SU meal deal is here

A toastie, space raiders and orange juice… Yum.

Toastie, Space Raiders and Orange Juice; the revolutionary new SU meal deal.

Earlier this month the Students’ Union proudly launched a £2 meal deal in the Common Room, situated on lower level of the Percy Gee building.

We tested the culinary innovation.

There are a mammoth FOUR variations of toasties to choose from, from classic cheese to gourmet cheese and onion, cheese and ham and cheese and tomato.

Vegetarian options have not been overlooked – but you pretty much have to like cheese.

Sadly, when we arrived for our high brow restuarant review only the pickled onion flavour of Space Raiders remained so we are unable to provide insight to the other flavours available.

However, rumours circulate of an exotic beef flavour.

In a rare special promotion, Pepsi or a carton of orange juice were available as a substitute for the standard bottle of water. In the midst of the excitement we chose the orange juice to make the meal as memorable as possible.

In a more comfortable setting we enjoyed light conversation as the tangy yet fresh concentrated juice flowed and noted how it managed to cleanse the palette of overwhelming onion flavours.

£2 Meal Deal is available to take away for a romantic night in.

The corn-based side dish proved complimentary to the rich cheesiness of the toastie and the salty undercurrent of ham running through it.

We would not recommended combining the Cheese and Onion toastie with the Pickled Onion Space Raiders as therein lacks variety and adventure.

Mozzarella seems to be the cheese of choice here, a popular and contemporary ingredient – perhaps selected for its melting qualities and accordance with a variety of other ingredients.

Overall the meal was not unpleasant to eat and is set at an agreeable price.  SU will undoubtedly soon be overrun with restaurant critics eager to sample the revolutionary meal.

It would be nice to see a multitude of breads on offer in future and perhaps other novelty shaped corn pieces.
