Greendale Farm Shop in Farringdon, near Exeter, has introduced a highly unusual product to its fish selection: a whole thresher shark, measuring 15 feet.

Greendale Farm Shop posted a picture of the shark on their Facebook page early last week and within hours there were cries of public outrage.

They soon removed the image in an attempt to stop the waves of angry comments and have since claimed that the shark was a “by-catch” but questions had already been raised about their fishing methods.

Whilst the Thresher shark is not protected from fishing, they are  listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and as Greendale Farm Shop have their own fishing boats it is not clear how the shark could have been caught accidentally.

However, the establishment have explained that the shark was dead when it was found in a net and the owner decided that, rather than letting the creature go to waste, they would transport it to Exeter.

Following the public uproar, Greendale have apologised for any offence caused.
