O’Neill’s in Cardiff reverses decision to ban England fans from Wales v England game

It would have left many students unable to visit the establishment

O’Neill’s in Cardiff city centre has announced that it will not be banning England supporters from its establishment for tonight’s (29th November) game.

On 28th November, the popular Cardiff establishment explained that it would not be allowing England supporters on the premise during the game.

However, the pub has now made a U-turn and has deleted previous social media posts that explained the ban.

In the now-deleted post, a spokesperson for the pub said: “For the safety and comfort of all our team and guests, we have taken the decision to be a ‘Home Fan Zone’ tomorrow evening. This means we will only be allowing supporters of the Welsh team into the business.

“The extreme levels of passion and support on show for this particular game are like nothing we have ever seen before, and we want everyone to enjoy it in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Many thanks for your understanding, and we look forwards to watching a great game. Cymru am Byth!”

This comes as Wales will face England in a historic World Cup group fixture which marks the first time the two teams play against each other at this event.

However, Peter Nicholson, of Nelsons Solicitors, who specialise in discrimination cases, told The Times: “Not all staff members who are football fans may support England and workplace banter may develop between staff members who support opposing nations, particularly as Wales has qualified for the tournament and will be facing England.

“It is essential that this does not cross the line into racial discrimination — based on nationality — and employers should make it clear that any discriminatory behaviour will result in disciplinary action.”

Here is a list of establishments recommended by The Cardiff Tab for supporters of both sides, including O’Neill’s.
