Student who fell from sixth floor window of Swansea University accommodation has died

Charlotte LaversA Swansea university student who died after falling from the sixth-floor window of a student halls building has now been named.
South Wales Police has now confirmed that the student was Matthew Gilbert, a 19-year old who attended Swansea University. He passed away from his injuries on April 24th, 1o days after the incident.
The incident happened early on Sunday 14th April at Swansea University’s Penmaen student accommodation on the Singleton campus. Matthew was rushed to hospital immediately.
Swansea University gave condolences to Matthew’s family: “Matthew was a first-year student with us studying LLB Law with Criminology.
“He was making excellent progress with his course. His loss is felt by all who knew him,” it said.
“Police have been informed that Matthew passed away in hospital on April 24. Family members are being supported by specially-trained officers.”
Swansea university has offered support to its students: “Our advice and support centre team are available to any students impacted by this incident, along with the university’s student support services.”
Mia Brown, also 19, who lives in the flat which Matthew fell from but had not met him, said: “It doesn’t feel real. We’ve had support because people found him, people knew him, people may have had classes with him.
“Anyone can reach out, no matter how big or small, we have got someone to talk to. I was hoping he would survive. It’s just horrible.”
Police had described Matthew Gilbert’s condition as “critical but stable” prior to his death, and said that his family was being supported.
Detective Inspector David Connick added: “Swansea University has been informed of Matthew’s death, and they will provide support to students.”
