Ranking: The best museums in Glasgow

How to impress your parents 101

Whether you’ve just been accepted into Glasgow (and survived enrolment day…) or whether you’ve been living in this city for a good few years, it’s always good to show off your intellectualism and impress everyone with how well cultured you are by visiting lots and lots of museums! So here are the best museums in Glasgow for a Uni student to visit!

13. Mackintosh House

This is technically part of the Hunterian Art Gallery, but as Glasgow students we get free entry (and ‘seniors’ get a reduced rate, if your nan interested). The Mackintosh House is a tribute to artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It’s a careful reassemblage of the main rooms from his and his wife’s home in Glasgow. Charles Mackintosh is an extremely important artist and architect for Glasgow, as he designed the Glasgow Art School, the interiors of the Willow Tea Rooms, and the Hill House. If you’re a fan of Glaswegian art, you’re probably a fan of him.

12. Glasgow Police Museum

This is an independent museum in the centre of town, but it’s certainly unique so why not pay it a visit? 10 year-old me loved it! (I think). The Museum organises the history of Glasgow’s police, which was the UK’s first modern municipal police force. Glasgow’s police force predates other city’s forces by as much as 30 years (take that London’s Metropolitan Police).

11. The Tall Ship Glenlee

The Glenlee is a steel-hulled three-masted barque – also known as a Big Ship. If your dad is visiting Glasgow, a maritime museum is sure to be a big hit (or maybe you just really like boats yourself, I wouldn’t judge).

10. The Tenement House

The clue is in the name – the Tenement House is a historic house museum, operated by the National Trust, that has an 1892 tenement flat frozen in time. For any sociology or history student, or even just someone interested in Glasgow’s history, this is a must see and deeply fascinating.

9. St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art

Free entry – hooray! If you’re a student of theology, or want to brush up on your Bible knowledge (I mean, why not?) then this museum will certainly appeal. There are four main galleries in the museum, and they explore the importance of religion in peoples’ lives across the world and through time, through fascinating displays, objects and works of art.

8. People’s Palace

It’s currently closed for refurbishment, but interesting enough to write down in your notes app for later as it’s due to open up again in 2027. The People’s Palace has both a historical museum, and a greenhouse so plenty to explore. There’s even a plaque to a cat called Smudge.

7. Glasgow Science Centre

Unfortunately, this is a paid attraction, but students get a reduced rate (£12.07). If you’re nerdy about science, this is sure to be a great trip. A trip to the planetarium is a must to impress your date or just get lost in space yourself.

6. Hunterian Zoology Museum

If the Science Centre is too far to visit (or too expensive, after spending all your SAAS on sweet treats), then Glasgow Uni’s very own Zoology Museum is free and located right next to the JMS.

5. Fossil Grove

A unique earth heritage site with eleven fossil tree stumps from the Carboniferous Period. They are about 330 million years old, so why not visit?

4. Hunterian Art Gallery

Whether you want to explore the museum yourself, or get a free tour from one of the guides (note: it might be one of your course mates), the Hunterian Art Gallery is full of exciting and interesting things for any history buff, or just a big fan of the Antonine Wall.

3. Riverside Museum

Wow, what a beautiful collection!

Glasgow’s Transport Museum is not just old cars and bikes (though there are plenty on display). This free (!!) museum has a recreated 1900s Glaswegian street, an older version of the majestic Clockwork Orange, and a gift shop full of Subway merch!

2. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

My friend’s father admiring the art

It wouldn’t be a list of ‘things to see in Glasgow’ without the beloved Kelvingrove museum! Not only does the Museum have daily organ recitals that you can sit in on for free without reservation (TIP: do not visit when deathly hungover, speaking from a personal experience), but they currently have a Barbie Exhibition on (Open from 13th June – 18th October 2026) to visit! Of course, once that exhibition ends, there is still plenty to see with works by Salvador Dali and more.

And finally, the best museum to visit in Glasgow…

1. The Burrell Collection

Located inside Pollok Park, this art museum is full of beautiful art and a lovely Cafe to refresh yourself after a hard day of intellectualism (although personally, I must boycott the Cafe because they never hired me several years ago despite my lack of qualifications).
