Chase Stokes reveals he saved Madison Bailey’s life on Outer Banks set when she was drowning
‘She was not able to breathe’
After the final season of Outer Banks arrived on Netflix, the cast is reminiscing on all five seasons, and Chase Stokes casually just revealed that he once saved Madison Bailey’s life while on set.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a game of “Lie vs Lie,” the John B actor revealed that Bailey almost drowned while they were filming the season two scene where JJ was knocked off the boat in Barbados, and he had to jump in and save her.
“We were in Barbados, and there’s a scene when JJ [Rudy Pankow] gets knocked off of a boat, and he’s unconscious in the water and Kiara’s holding him up,” Stokes recalled. “I realised that I couldn’t see Bails’ face anymore.”
He said they’d already been treading water for about “a minute” before starting to film the scene and “it was really hard to communicate”.
“I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while.’ So I jumped off the boat, and I realised that she was not able to breathe underwater,” he continued.
The Kiara actress said she couldn’t “swim closer to the boat and there was a “whole struggle,” but the crew thought it was all just part of the scene.

“Everyone thought it was like, ‘Oh, wow, they’re in the scene. This is great’,” Stokes said. “I was like, ‘No, she’s drowning’. I was like, ‘Hey, that’s not acting!’ “Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good!'”
Bailey laughed: “I was drowning. Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good’.”
Thankfully, they pulled her out of the water before anything bad happened, but Stokes and Bailey admitted that the “underwater work” was the hardest part of the entire show. The worst part is, Stokes made it look so easy.
“You actually make a bad day worse. When I’m struggling to barely swim, Chase is like [swimming easily]. I swear he’s breathing under there just to make me look bad,” Bailey joked.
